Kurt Johnson, President
Computer Maintenance Service

Who We Are

Kurt Johnson was passionate about helping small and medium businesses use technology to grow. He found that by taking over the reins of some of their IT services, they could do just that.

In 1991, Kurt, along with his wife, Jeanne, founded Computer Maintenance Service, a break-fix business where they cleaned and maintained residential and commercial computers. At that time, the technology was new, and computers were too expensive to just throw them away and get new ones. They had to be fixed. But as technologies evolved at lightning speed, CMS’s business clients struggled to keep up. It became evident that the future of IT lay in a managed IT approach.

Today, CMS’s managed approach is a “one-stop shop” service that also includes cloud computing, cyber security, data backup and recovery, camera and phone systems, and equipment repair.

Since the beginning, CMS has been a trusted and responsive IT solutions provider for small and medium-sized businesses across a wide range of fields. But where they really differentiate themselves is in the local manufacturing sector.

Manufacturers have unique challenges with mission-critical systems and processes that are responsible for increasing productivity, reducing downtime, assuring quality and overseeing risk management and compliance.

CMS removes the IT burden so manufacturers can focus on their strategic business goals by offering round-the-clock monitoring of their computers and network to help prevent problems before they happen.

CMS believes that knowing a technician’s name matters. If a business is handing over the responsibility of their IT systems, then trust and reliability are essential in building the relationship.

With a small, dedicated staff of local employees, CMS doesn’t have a revolving door of a hundred technicians, where the client might see or speak to someone different every time.

CMS also believes in predictable and transparent flat-fee pricing. Their custom service packages deliver what businesses need and want without overstepping the boundaries of their budget.

Since starting out in 1991, Computer Maintenance Service is a complete technology solution provider that is 100% committed to making sure business owners have the most reliable and professional IT services throughout the Chicago suburbs, solving IT nightmares once and for all.

How Kurt Johnson Reinvented Himself As The Go-To MSP Throughout The Chicago Suburbs

At 17, Kurt Johnson and his brothers were living with their mother in Illinois, when she left and moved to Connecticut. Fresh out of high school, Kurt felt lost, with no time to figure out what he wanted to do with his life. He found a path forward to becoming a mechanic to support himself.

A quick learner, Kurt started in an apprentice program and became a journeyman mechanic in a year and a half.

The wages and benefits were great, he was a member of the mechanics union, he liked his job and he was good at it. But after 10 years in the field, he wanted to have his own business. That’s when he and his wife, Jeanne, stumbled into the world of IT and started CMS part-time in their home basement.

In 1991, Kurt left his day job to give CMS his full attention – a decision he has never regretted. Today, Computer Maintenance Service is a trusted, fast-growing IT services firm serving small to medium-sized manufacturing and medical businesses throughout the Chicago suburbs.

Kurt also brings his passion for making IT work successfully for businesses in Chicago to his local community. He’s a board member of the Technology Commission for his village of approximately 100,000 people. The board is charged with making decisions on strategic IT policy issues.
